Missing Memories
I took a moment to look at the watch and try to remember when I had last worn it. I asked Madelyn, who had just entered, if she knew how it got there. This time, surprisingly, she gave no reason. Rather, she merely shrugged, her customary brightness temporarily fading. She was obviously at a loss for words, which just added to the strangeness of the situation.

Explaining It Away
Always quick to smile, Madelyn shrugged it off. “Maybe you’re just a little overworked,” she said, in an almost too-happy tone. I wanted to believe her, but the memory loss felt strange. “We all forget things from time to time. No biggie.” On the surface, I was encouraged to let it go by her laughter. However, my doubts were smoldering behind that.
