We all take time off throughout the year to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Imagine booking a trip, planning for months in advance, and being highly disappointed with the outcome? Talk about crowded and dirty beaches…no, thanks! To ensure you and your travel buddies experience the trip of a lifetime, we have put together a list of three of the world’s cleanest and most spectacular beaches. Get your bathing suits and sunglasses ready…it’s vacation time!
Arugam Bay- Sri Lanka, Asia
Ever heard of Sri Lanka? You have? Did you know that the island is home to one of the cleanest beaches in the whole entire world? Don’t worry…it was news to us too. Many natives call this area home, around 1 million, to be exact. You may be wondering, with the number of people, and the vast number of homes, how is the beach not overpopulated and filthy? This thought crossed our minds as well…is it too good to be true? The people and community of Arugam Bay are very passionate about their beautiful piece of paradise. Recovery efforts and organizations exist to ensure the bay stays clean and in tip-top shape.
Due to the bay’s location and shape, waves form naturally, being a favorite spot among surfers. The amazing weather, the cleanliness of the beaches, and the kid-friendly nature of the island, attract tourists year-round. Similar to many other islands, tourism is one of the biggest sources of income. Unfortunately, the island lost a lot of money in the year 2004, when a horrible natural storm wreaked havoc on countries and islands throughout the Indian Ocean. The tsunami was donned the “deadliest in history”, taking lives and ruining beaches. The people of Arugam Bay were devastated, but didn’t sulk for too long, they knew how important their quick decisions would be for the future of their beloved island. As said previously, rescue efforts and NGO’s are quite common, and as you can assume, were readily used and called upon during this tragedy. Locals and tourists were the backbone behind the re-vamp, and some even claim that the beach is now even better than it once was.
As you may or may not know, Sri Lanka is filled with enchanting white-sand beaches, as well as Asia as a whole. Arugam Bay must be beyond spectacular if it has been recognized as one of the best, not just in Asia, but in the world! This impressive accolade has us booking the next flight to Sri Lanka’s beautiful, Arugam Bay.
Fraser Island Beach- Queensland, Australia
We’re all familiar with Australia and its’ claim to fame for being a country with exquisite beaches. Unsurprisingly, in the Eastern part of the country, Queensland is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Fraser Island Beach is known for its coral-colored sand, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Not only is it one of the top in the entire world, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site…talk about award-winner! Being a UNESCO World Heritage site comes with it’s perks. Not only does it attract worldwide attention, it also ensures that the beach is immaculately looked after, ensuring an exceptionally clean spot.
Not only is Fraser Island Beach full of sand, water, and exotic animals; it is also home to endless types of flora and fauna. Curious why the sand is a reddish hue, and not similar in color to sand of other beaches? Two words: coral & hematite. The coral throughout the island, and the mineral hematite, both affect the sand color, and even affect the salt water in the late afternoons. That’s not all…can you believe that the area is also home to 350 types of birds?! It doesn’t get much better than this!
The well sought-after Fraser Island Beach is definitely on our bucket list for the near future. The beautiful beaches, amazing species, and the fact that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, have us sold. See you soon, Queensland!
Matira Beach- Bora Bora, French Polynesia
The French Polynesian Island, Bora Bora, is one of our absolute favorite places in the world. Although, it’s not very convenient, being located halfway across the world! The isolated location makes it that much more desirable…who wouldn’t want to be left alone, with no cell-service, 12+ hours from home…*crickets, crickets*. You know when you’re in therapy and they tell you to dream of the most perfect place in the world? We wouldn’t be surprised if Matira Beach popped into many people’s heads. Photos of the sea look extremely similar to beaches we see in movies and on travel brochures…truly a dream come true!
Bora Bora is a very well-known vacation spot, but only for the high rollers. With limited flights of only four per day, and the remote location of the island, a getaway with your husband/wife does not come cheap…we’re talking an average of $400-$2,000 USD per night!!! For those lucky enough to embark on the vacation of a lifetime, you won’t have to worry about overcrowding, Matira Beach stretches about a mile long, providing everyone with ample space to stretch out and catch some rays.
Bora Bora itself, is an extremely breathtaking island in French Polynesia, with numbers of incredible spots. Matira Beach must have something truly special for being one of the area’s most sought-after. Due to the number of tourists inhabiting the beach year-round, it is crucial for both the island and its’ people to keep the sand and water in tip-top shape. This is why we chose this equally enchanting and immaculate beach to round out our list.
