Roll, don’t fold.

Those who are travel experts know how to stuff a months’ worth of clothes into a teeny tiny pack. And the one thing they all agree on? Roll, don’t fold! When you tightly roll clothes, you take up less space and they won’t wrinkle as much.

Make a packing list

Don’t procrastinate when it comes to packing! I know, I know but it’s true. Begin your packing process in advance that way you can make a list of all that you need before, during and on the flight back home. This way you won’t’ forget anything important and won’t take anything unnecessary with you.

Know your airline’s baggage-fee policy

Most airlines with international flights allow for one bag however many U.S. carriers charge a heavy sum for domestic flights. Before you even start packing, check your airline’s website to see what their policy is on baggage.

Use your personal item wisely

Each flier gets one carry on bag and one personal item. Most personal items have to fit a specific size requirement as well, such as a purse, laptop bag, or backpack. Caroline Morse recommends, “Forget wasting my personal-item allowance with a tiny purse. I’ll bring a larger tote bag that I can stash under the seat but will still give me extra storage space. This will come in handy for keeping all of the things I’ll need to be on hand during the flight within arms’ reach as well.”

Pack dual-purpose garments

If you can pack less then do so! Therefore if you have a dual-purpose item, pack it. Think of pants that can become shorts or a jacket that can be used as a travel pillow. This will help cut down on airline baggage fees.

Layer

Always wear layers and pack in layers. Your clothes for on the go should include a lot of layers so you can handle whatever climate comes your way. Next, the items you include in your bag should be in neat layers making it easier to screen. The quicker they can screen your stuff, the quicker you’re through that security line.

Never check essential items

Whatever you do, don’t pack your valuables or essentials in your checked luggage! Your passport, identification, money, credit cards, jewelry, electronics, and other valuable items should always be on the plane with you. Always.
